Renters United Maryland's Protect Our Homes Day 2022

Join Renters United Maryland for their annual "lobby night" to speak with state legislators on their housing justice plan!

RUM's three-part housing justice plan, listed below, will help struggling families, prevent evictions, and protect public health:

  1. Effective Eviction Prevention Services - We must provide strong eviction prevention services, including a funded Access to Counsel program, and make the time for people to utilize those services when it matters most - at court.

  2. Just Cause Eviction - We need to prevent arbitrary lease non-renewals and ensuing Tenant Holding Over evictions, which roughly doubled during the pandemic compared to 2019. Counties should be given the power to place limits on lease non-renewals.

  3. Deter Unlicensed Landlords - The General Assembly should make clear that illegally operating landlords may not utilize taxpayer-funded eviction proceedings. When unlicensed landlords can protect their profits in our courts, there’s no incentive to comply with the law. This hurts renters who report the illegal activity and undermines local agencies in their efforts to eradicate unsafe housing.

We know that safe and stable housing has far reaching economic, health, and social benefits to individuals, families, and communities, and is key to reducing racial inequities. This is even more true during the ongoing public health and economic crisis.
