The 2024 Maryland General Assembly Session Begins Today

The 2024 Maryland General Assembly session begins today at noon. Lawmakers, lobbyists and advocates are converging on Annapolis for the next 90 days to pass legislation for our state government.

More than 600 bills have been pre-filed before the legislative session, in contrast to 400 bills having been pre-filed by this time last year. It is expected that there may be as many as 3,000 bills introduced this year.

Progressive Harford County encourages you to advocate for bills that impact Harford. Sending an email to your legislator is preferred, but you can also make a phone call or post on social media and include the hashtags #MDGA24 and #MDpolitics.

Find out who your legislators are here. You're also encouraged to contact House Speaker Adrienne Jones and Senate President Bill Ferguson since they decide which bills get a vote in their respective chambers.

Here's a template for contacting legislators about Progressive Harford's priority bills:

Subject line: Support crucial bills impacting Harford County

Body:

Dear [LEGISLATOR],

My name is _____ and my address is _____. I am requesting that you vote for the following bills and work on the support it needs to get to Governor Moore’s desk.

  • Dels. Andre Johnson and Steve Johnson's bill: HB688 Municipal Incorporation - County Commissioners or County Council - Required Approval of Referendum Request. This bill would allow one of the largest minority populations in Harford Country to have a governing voice and body for their community.

  • Del. Sheila Ruth's bill: HB329 Public Health- Commission on Universal Health Care.

Thank you for your consideration.
